For councils

It is our view that as part of the Governments sustainability initiative we all have a responsibility to be aware of our carbon footprint.  It is an accepted practice to plant and maintain trees as a mechanism to sequester carbon emissions.

When planning applications are being decided, councils insist on reports to allow members and offers a better opportunity understand the impact that a new development will have on the local and wider environment.  Mitigation is often conditioned as part of a planning application and planning agreements facilitate the delivery of and commitment by developers to mitigate the impact they development makes on the local area.

Our proposal is unique.  We believe that developers and councils have an obligation to initiate carbon offset with tree planting initiatives.  Each new development attracts new cars to our roads and it should be the responsibility of developers and councils to ensure that carbon emission forms part of an applicant’s mitigation strategy.

We are offering councils the opportunity to measure traffic movements but specifically in relation to carbon emission impact.  We believe that local authorities have a duty to advise and request that new developments make an allowance for tree planting (to mitigate carbon emission) as part of an applicants landscape proposal.  If as an example for each house a developer planted 50 trees, this would go quite a considerable distance in helping the country reach its climate agenda.
